Tips for Plein Air painting with pastels

I just returned from a plein air event in Fulton, MO where I painted one oil and 4 pastels. It was unseasonably hot but my perseverance paid off with a sale and awards, one being first place! The event was only 4 days so I sat up and took down my Soltek easel many times. One of the secrets to being able to focus on your art, is having your frame ready to go, with hardware on the back and if working in pastels, having your support, pastel paper or board, foam core, ( no cardboard!)  and your glass (I prefer Tru Vue ultra view, which is very similar to Museum glass.

Show Me St. Louis

I would like to thank Heidi Glaus channel 5, for interviewing me in Forest Park on Wed. which was aired on Show Me St. Louis this morning. Today, my husband, Craig and I will be setting up for the Historic Shaw Art fair, which will start tomorrow, Oct. 1st 9-5. Sunday 11-5pm. I will have a lot of new artwork there thanks to the plein air (in Open air) events that I have been participating in this month. On September 10th, Debbie Williams and I went to Louisiana, MO where I won second place for a 20 x 16 piece that I did at the Stark Bros Nursery there.

Time

Posting, blogging, talking, typing, editing....what about painting? Finding time and the ability to focus is the hardest part of creating art. To allow your mind to wander and the left brain to quiet down, is not an easy task! I prefer to take pen to paper, rather than typing my thoughts. I also would rather read a book than a computer screen! So I hope that explains my lack of posts.

I  am looking forward to sharing my new artwork with everyone at Art & Air in Webster Groves, MO on June 5, 6 and 7th. See you there!?

Headed North

Last month I was able to travel to Door County, WI and plein air paint for almost a week! What a beautiful part of the county. If you have not been there I suggest you add it to your
list of places to go. From St. Louis it was about a 9 hour drive north, so the temps. were milder.

30 day challenge

This is going to be a challenge for me! I have trouble focusing on just one project but to paint a painting every day in Jan. should be fun, right? Perhaps just the push I need. The Green Door Art Gallery is going to showcase the artwork. The artist that started this challenge is Leslie Saeta so to see a lot of artwork or join the fun go to lesliesaeta.blogspot.com

Good Read

I read a wonderful little book by Austin Kleon "Steal Like An Artist, 10 things nobody told you about being creative. I recommend ordering yourself a copy, if you enjoy a light, self help type of book!
